KEY LEARNINGS

In the bustling world of B2B sales, standing out in a sea of competition is a challenge that every business faces. At INDUSTRY 2023, April Dunford delved into this challenge, exploring how to move beyond the mundane feature-focused product walkthroughs to create a compelling sales narrative that resonates with buyers. Here’s a look at what we learned about crafting sales pitches that truly make an impact.

Understanding the Buyer’s Dilemma

Let’s face it, buying is hard. And if you’re in the B2B space, purchasing decisions can feel as daunting as selecting the right toilet – if not more. Buyers are inundated with options, and sifting through these to make an informed decision is overwhelming. More often than not, they’re blasted with a whirlwind of features during a demo, which only adds to the confusion. This uncertainty frequently leads to the safest choice – doing nothing. Astonishingly, 40% to 60% (sometimes even 80%) of B2B sales processes end in “No Decision.” It’s not a testament to the superiority of the status quo but a clear sign that buyers struggle to navigate their options.

The Power of Strong Positioning in Sales Pitches

Strong positioning forms the backbone of a compelling sales pitch. It effectively answers the crucial question every buyer has: “Why should I pick you?” But here’s the catch – great positioning often gets lost in translation when it comes to sales. To avoid this pitfall, we need to translate positioning into a narrative that not only engages but also enlightens the buyer.

Crafting a Winning Sales Narrative

The essence of an impactful sales pitch lies in its structure, transforming a list of features into a compelling story. Here’s how you can structure your narrative:

  1. Market Insight: Start with an insightful observation about the market. This sets the context and shows your deep understanding of the industry.
  2. Alternatives: Discuss the pros and cons of existing solutions. This demonstrates your awareness of the market landscape and the buyer’s potential considerations.
  3. Perfect World Description: Paint a picture of an ideal solution – one that aligns with what your company offers. This step is about connecting the dots between the market needs and your product’s capabilities.
  4. Differentiated Value: Organize your product’s features around your unique value proposition. This is where you align your product’s strengths with the buyer’s needs.

Case Study: Help Scout’s Approach

Take Help Scout’s approach to customer service software, designed specifically for digital products. Their insight was that for digital products, customer service is crucial as it’s often the primary interaction point with customers. By aligning their product development with this insight, Help Scout created a narrative that resonated deeply with their target audience.

Implementing the Sales Narrative

However, crafting this narrative is only the beginning. The real challenge lies in its implementation. Start by testing the approach with a single sales rep, fine-tuning it based on real-world feedback. Then, gradually roll it out to the wider team. Remember, if the pitch fails to resonate, it’s back to the drawing board with your positioning. The pitch should evolve only when your positioning does.

Key Takeaways for Sales Success

  1. Involvement of Sales Team: Ensure that your sales team is heavily involved in this process, but balance their involvement without detracting from their selling time.
  2. Test and Tune: Pilot the approach with one sales representative before a broader rollout.
  3. Be Ready to Pivot: If the approach doesn’t work, revisit and refine your positioning.
  4. Consistency is Key: Your pitch should only change when your positioning does.

The landscape of B2B sales is fraught with challenges, but by transforming how we pitch our products, we can significantly increase our chances of closing deals. It’s about moving away from feature-heavy demonstrations to a narrative that helps buyers understand why your product is the ideal solution for their needs. By crafting a sales pitch that’s rooted in strong positioning and delivered as a compelling narrative, we can guide our buyers through the complexity of choices, directly addressing their concerns and aspirations. This approach doesn’t just sell a product; it offers a solution, a story, and an experience that buyers can relate to and, more importantly, believe in.

The Rise of PLG

Product led growth is an effective strategy for companies of all sizes. It’s an approach that puts the product at the core of the customer journey, allowing users to try the product and decide for themselves whether it is worth buying.

In the current market situation, being able to effectively scale your acquisition and trial-to-paid conversion is one of the easiest way to confirm your PLG growth strategy is on the right track.

With the rise of product-led-growth, customers now have easy access to software like never before and with that customer expectations have been higher.

Enter interactive product demos. Growth and marketing teams can now easily create fully interactive replicas of their product to easily engage visitors the moment they land on the website and seamlessly product led growth.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss the advantages of interactive product demos and how they can be used as part of a product led growth go-to-market strategy.

Enter The Interactive Product Demo

An interactive product demo is a type of demonstration of a product that allows all website visitors the chance to actively engage with the product, rather than simply watching a video or waiting to get on a sales call to actually see it.

Interactive product demos allow for a hands-on experience, by actually interacting within the product itself – filling out form fields, clicking on buttons, or using the product in a simulated environment.

The purpose of an interactive demo is to give the user a better understanding of the product’s capabilities, and how it can solve a specific problem that they have.

The Benefits of Interactive Product Demos

Interactive product demos are a great way to engage potential customers, as they allow users to experience the product firsthand.

Users can now interact with the product and get an idea of how it works and what it can do for them all without having to ever create an account or talk to a sales person.

This can be a powerful driver of product awareness and adoption.

Here are a few of the core benefits of leveraging interactive product demos:

1. Educate website visitors

Interactive product demos can be used as an introduction to your product by providing a hands-on experience for the user to explore the product’s features and functionality. This can help:

  • Showcase the benefits of using the product
  • Highlight key features and how they work
  • Demonstrate how the product solves a problem or addresses a need
  • Build trust and credibility with the potential customer
  • Encourage product adoption by allowing users to experience it for themselves

Education is key, and by leveraging interactive demos on-site, now all website visitors have the chance to actually use the core functionality of your product in real-time.

2. Drive more (and better) lead flow

Interactive product demos are a great lead capture tool that can help SaaS businesses generate more quality leads.

On top of that, they allow you to educate your prospects better before they even get into the platform, or before having a sales conversation – driving better qualified leads to your sales team.

A few other ways that they help generate quality leads include:

  • Providing a preview of the product and its capabilities, creating interest and attracting potential customers (giving customers what they actually want – to see and use the product!)
  • Offering a personalized experience that showcases the value the product can bring to their specific use case.
  • Allowing the sales team to better understand the customer’s needs and tailor their pitch accordingly.
  • Encouraging customers to share their contact information in exchange for access to the demo

Overall, interactive product demos can be a powerful tool for generating leads by engaging potential customers and demonstrating the value of your SaaS product.

Integrating Interactive Product Demos into Your Go To Market Strategy

When integrating interactive product demos into your go to market strategy, it’s important to consider how it fits in with the rest of your product and pricing.

Interactive product demos can be used to introduce the product, educate potential customers, and generate leads.

Additionally, interactive product demos can be used to drive product adoption and increase customer engagement.

Leveraging Interactive Product Demos to Support Product Led Growth

Instead of having to drop users into a free trial without any context, you can now leverage personalized product demos that cover the aha moment of your product without introducing any friction at all.

Once the user has seen the value, its easy to prompt them towards a free trial or sign up!

Consider leveraging an interactive demo platform that allows personalization so you can cater to the specific use cases depending on your customer personas.

Final Thoughts on Interactive Product Demos

Interactive product demos are a great tool for driving product led growth.

They allow users to experience the product firsthand, enabling them to make an informed decision about whether it is worth buying.

In the end, users want to actually try before they sign-up or book a demo – so why not give them exactly what they want, and trigger that “aha” moment directly on your website?

Announces Its In-Person Return to Manhattan this November

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Cleveland, OH / New York, NY — August 3, 2021

Product Collective, a fast-growing digital media company headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, announced today the acquisition of the New York Product Conference (NYPC). Attracting hundreds of attendees each year, the NYPC is held at The Times Center in Manhattan. This year, the in-person event takes place on November 11th, making its return after a COVID-forced hiatus in 2020 (a successful virtual event was held in its place attracting over a thousand attendees).

The NYPC has played an important role in serving the New York Product Management community for the past several years — drawing attendees from companies like American Express, Instagram, Warby Parker, Mailchimp, and others. Its upcoming edition features 12 speakers and other interactive sessions, headlined by Scott Belsky — Chief Product Officer of Adobe and author of the bestselling book, The Messy Middle.

“We’re thrilled to complete the acquisition of this important event for New York’s product management community,” said Paul McAvinchey, Product Collective’s Co-Founder. “This is an event that we’ve collaborated with and have even attended in the past, but we’re grateful for the opportunity to partner in an even deeper way and invest even more into this conference in the years to come.”

The NYPC was co-founded by Dan Storms, Ami Stuart, and Brent Tworetzky, and later joined by Seanita Tolliver. “The New York Product Conference has grown each year by investing in the craft of product management, learning from New York’s leading founders and builders, and connecting with each other as a diverse community,” said Brent Tworetzky. “We are delighted to partner with Product Collective and their terrific INDUSTRY platform to continue expanding the NYPC’s reach and impact across the product community.”

Founded in 2015, Product Collective connects, informs, and inspires those building world-class software products, and this acquisition further fuels the growth of the company and the community it serves. Product Collective’s flagship conference, INDUSTRY: The Product Conference is already the world’s premier Software Product Management conference, with thousands attending its past events in North America and Europe.

Beyond its in-person conference series, Product Collective also serves a community of 30,000+ product management professionals in a variety of other ways — including its weekly newsletter, semi-monthly video chat series, industry job board, and virtual conference series. Product Collective’s Co-Founder, Mike Belsito, is also Co-Host of Rocketship.FM, one of the longest-running podcasts for entrepreneurs and product management professionals, which has been featured in the past by Forbes, Entrepreneur, and elsewhere.

Product Collective’s Mike Belsito, Paul McAvinchey, and Rebecca Feliciano all serve as organizers of INDUSTRY: The Product Conference and will serve in a similar capacity for the NYPC while continuing to collaborate with its founding organizers. To complement its team’s efforts, Product Collective has also recently added Scott Schulman as a Strategic Advisor. Schulman’s 20+ years of experience as a media and events executive, including leadership roles at Dow Jones and UBM, gives Product Collective the strategic insights and deep B2B events experience needed to augment its continued growth.
